The Diamond-Cutter: Cutting Through Delusion

With Byakuren Judith Ragir and Sosan Theresa Flynn

The Diamond Sutra is one of the most prestigious and important sutras in the Mahayana Prajnaparamita Teachings. It is a sutra that unpacks the meaning of the word “emptiness” (shunyata in Sanskrit) often interchangable with the word “suchness” (tathata in Sanskrit). We will study together how the teachings of “unbounded openness” or “unconstructed mind” (English translations) can open up our daily life with spontaneity and freedom. It’s important to try to understand this sutra, not from abstract ideas, but from your own experiences and your own suffering. To ask: “Do these teachings of the Buddha have anything to do with my daily life?”

We will pursue this study with the understanding of emptiness (shunyata) and compassion (karuna) integrated in the overarching concept of skillful means (upaya). Each class will include meditation, student and teacher talks, small and large group discussions and readings. The text will be The Diamond Sutra by Red Pine.
