Awakening the Mind of Love: Meditation & Energy

With Byakuren Judith Ragir
Pema Chödrön’s book, No Time to Lose

When asked, “How have you found such peace and kindness in your troubled situation?” The Dalai Lama replied that he follows the instructions of Shantideva!

Using the book and commentary No Time to Lose, A Timely Guide to the Way of the Bodhisattva by Pema Chödrön, we will study chapters 7 and 8 of Shantideva's The Way of the Bodhisattva, which focus on enthusiasm (or energy) and meditation. The practice of enthusiasm encourages us to let “liking the taste of freedom” bring out the energy of our practice. Our growing intelligence for the dharma and the quality of a joyful heart will support our perseverance in the hard path of breaking our habituated patterns and waking up! The practice of meditation first involves the stabilization of the mind, and then goes on to work with avoiding distractions such as lust, attachment to wealth and other entanglements with things. Within the study of meditation, we will examine the practice of tonglen—giving and receiving—and the practices of the “equality of self and other” and “exchanging of self and other.”
