The Ox and His Herdsman

With Flying Fish Barbara Murphy

The Ox Herding pictures and verse date back to the Ch'an period of Buddhism in China. Based on ancient Buddhist texts, most notably the Avatamsaka, or The Flower Ornament Sutra, these images depict the stages to Enlightenment from aimless searching to spiritual awakening and returning to everyday life. It is a teaching that useful for those new to Zen as well as seasoned practitioners. The delightful poetic verses of each stage are accompanied with ancient, beautiful paintings. Contemporary Zen line drawings also give clues to the meaning of each verse and invite the student to enter the teaching as the herdsman. Please join us as we investigate these timeless images and bring them into the twenty first Century.
