Zendo Etiquette

With Raisei Marc Anderson

One of the aspects of Zen practice that Americans often struggle with is ritual form or etiquette. While spiritual understanding is not defined or confined by form, it is necessarily expressed through objects and behaviors. In the case of Soto Zen, we have inherited ways of practice that come out of and express the aesthetic and spiritual values of Chinese and even more prominently Japanese cultures. As Zen continues to take root in American soil it will blossom into flowers of varied colors and shapes. To nurture this development in a wholesome and useful way, it is important we clarify and embody the forms of our practice.

This workshop will be a thorough and detailed practicum on the forms at Clouds in Water. There will be some discussion of the function of form and the historical background of the forms we use. This workshop is recommended for practitioners of all levels of interest. It is our hope that this workshop will clarify and focus the beauty of a shared and embodied way of living and practicing in community.
