2009 Fall Practice Period
September 10–December 10

The tradition of intensive or focused periods of practice is common to virtually all schools of Buddhism. In the Japanese Zen tradition these practice periods are known as ango (peaceful dwelling). This time tested training is an opportunity for practitioners to clarify their spiritual intentions, to deepen their realization and to more fully integrate their practice life by dedicating themselves to a specific and focused time and tenor of Buddhist practice. Returning in this way to the three treasures of Buddha, Dharma and Sangha, the entire community is upheld and revitalized

Since we all come to practice with different life circumstances and backgrounds, we offer three options for participating in this practice period. While pushing the edge and surrendering to our spiritual life is part of what we receive from this training, care for our bodies, relationships, home and work is essential. We think that these three options make it possible for most practitioners to participate in a way that will be enriching. The Fall Practice Period begins September 10 and ends December 10.

Option 1:
  • Individually created practice commitments
  • Meet with a practice leader three times
  • Come to the center once a week (for the Sunday Morning Meditation or a weekday morning meditation or the Wednesday evening class)
Option 2:
  • Establish a practice focus with a practice leader
  • Meet with your practice leader three times
  • Attend the Wednesday class on the precepts
  • Attend Saturday or Sunday mornings for the full morning meditation schedule
  • Attend at least one morning sitting during the week
  • Attend at least one sesshin or retreat during the period
  • Establish a daily sitting commitment
Option 3: Center Based Practice
  • Establish a practice focus with a practice leader
  • Meet with your practice leader three times
