The tradition of intensive or focused periods of practice is common to virtually all schools of Buddhism. In the Japanese Zen tradition these practice periods are known as ango (peaceful dwelling).
This time-tested training is an opportunity for practitioners to clarify their spiritual intentions, to deepen their realization and to more fully integrate their practice life by dedicating themselves to a specific and focused time and tenor of Buddhist practice. Returning in this way to the three treasures of Buddha, Dharma and Sangha, the entire community is upheld and revitalized.
The training systems that have been transmitted to us are largely based on monastic models. Here at Clouds in Water we are continually refining our ways of practice and training. We want to encourage and preserve the rigor and depth of deeply committed Buddhist training while honoring the realities of modern lay life.
It is important to be realistic about our responsibilities and maintain balance in home, work and spiritual life. From that understanding, participants in the fall practice period are asked to design a practice intention that will push them beyond their current level of commitment, that is doable given their circumstances and preserves and respects family, health and work.
Zen training can be characterized by development in three areas: meditation, study and community life. Participants in the winter practice period are required to make a commitment to at least one menu selection in each of these three areas. The selections are listed roughly in order of intensity or depth of commitment. The most intense training schedule would be a commitment to sit at the center five mornings a week, participation in all of the offered teachings and sesshins and participation in the center-based practice circle and meetings with a practice leader.
Please register for Winter classes, retreats and sesshins. A commitment sheet will be available in September for outlining your Practice Period. You will be asked to turn your plan into the group you choose for your “Sangha” selection.
