Throwing the Doors Open to Refuge & Vow
In Sōtō Zen Buddhism, we have a wonderful practice called jukai, which can be translated as “giving/receiving precepts.” Precepts are ethical guidelines, or vows. As Zen teacher Diane Eshin Rizzetto writes, “The way of the precepts is the path of going beyond the dream of self. It is the path that reveals the truth that our own happiness and well-being is intricately connected to the happiness and well-being of others.”
At Clouds in Water, jukai typically involves up to a year of study, sewing a rakasu (or small Buddhist robe), and participation in a formal ceremony where participants receive a Buddhist name*. But a few months ago, the transmitted teachers decided that we would like to offer jukai to everyone, in a simpler format. We have many members and friends who might be ready to receive the precepts, but don’t have life circumstances that would allow a year-long commitment. In September, we will be offering a modified jukai ceremony. We welcome you to participate if you want to take a step toward deepening your engagement with this spiritual path and aligning your life with the precepts. You are also welcome to participate if you have already received jukai but would like to recommit to your vows.
I am very excited to throw the doors wide open and offer this beautiful ceremony to everyone who is interested. Check out the details and register at this link, or email us at info@cloudsinwater.org.
